FIJI papaya, marketed internationally as Fiji Red, has been given a big thumbs up from consumers in New Zealand.
Nature’s Way Cooperative CEO Michael Brown said a series of consumer focus groups and sensory tests that were conducted in New Zealand last year revealed positive results.
“Consumer sensory testing which included ‘Fiji Red’ papaya, a yellow fleshed papaya from the Philippines and two Australian papaya varieties indicated that ‘Fiji Red’ was the most preferred in terms of taste, colour and size. For non-consumers surveyed, a lack of knowledge and fear of disappointment presented the greatest barriers to papaya purchase and consumption,” he said.
